This is a full-time attorney position to provide substantive legal assistance and representation to low-income eligible migrants and seasonal agricultural farmworkers. We are looking for someone with a strong commitment to public interest and social justice advocacy that is willing to learn and assist with the diverse legal needs of the seasonal and migrant farmworkers in South Carolina. Typical cases involve employment law, immigration law, occupational safety, and civil rights. For example, employers failing to pay workers’ wages; discrimination based on sex, citizenship, or national origin; subjecting workers to human trafficking conditions; and breaking recruitment promises. You will also participate in community outreach and projects geared to improving the working and living conditions of farm workers.
Sample responsibilities:
- Providing legal advocacy to low-income clients in civil litigation matters including delivering high quality legal representation in administrative, state, and federal forums.
- Developing and implementing case and issue strategies.
- Preparing for and conducting hearings and trials.
- Performing legal research, analysis, and writing including drafting of pleadings, briefs, and orders, preparation and review of discovery and motion practice.
Minimum requirements and other qualifications:
- A JD from an accredited law school and a member of the SC Bar in good standing
- Committed and energetic person with strong analytical, research and interpersonal skills.
- Cultural humility in collaborating with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.
- Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail oriented.
- Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to collaborate with a dynamic team.
- Strong language skills (oral and written) in Spanish, including good oral presentation skills.
